Parklets Kiel

Objective

The KielRegion is pursuing the goal of developing a consistent, modular design for parklets that strengthens recognition value in public spaces and makes regional identity visible. In addition, parklets are intended to encourage people to rethink the existing use of street space, thereby promoting social participation and local involvement.

The design concept is developed in a participatory process together with citizens and relevant stakeholders. In doing so, both design and structural legal requirements are to be defined and coordinated jointly.

Modular and flexible concept

The parklets of the KielRegion follow a modular and flexible design concept. They consist of a basic module in the form of a stable platform and complementary furniture elements that can be combined as needed and depending on the location. Possible features include seating elements, an open bookcase, and plant elements that invite visitors to stay, get involved, and add greenery.

The modular system allows for individual adaptation to different spatial situations and usage requirements in the public space. At the same time, it enables cost-effective production by local craft businesses. The use of wooden elements not only creates a pleasant, natural look, but also supports ecological and sustainable design goals. This results in parklets that are flexible in their use and design – contributing to the upgrading of street space and promoting participation.

Project visualization

The parklets were visualized in various configurations and presented as examples to illustrate the wide range of possible uses in public spaces. These visualizations clearly and comprehensively illustrate how the product can be used in street space – from its function to its spatial impact.
